This is a graph of the koala population after their specie was almost hunted down to extinction in 1937.
Before 1937, koalas were being hunted for their coat. Since most koalas are a gray color, they didn't blend into the eucalyptus tree bark as well, making it easy to be seen and hunted. A variation that could've helped some koalas was having more of a brownish tint to their fur which helps the adapt to their environment and camouflage form predators. Natural Selection, best suited spices survive and reproduce, allowed the brownish tint koalas to survive and kept the population alive. There are also limiting factors with the koala that prevent the population from rising. One of the koala's traits, eating only and living in eucalyptus trees does not help them when people want to cut their food and shelter down. When the trees are cut down, the koalas have to move to a different home and re adapt. Not all of the koalas can re adapt and with a shortage of eucalyptus trees, other picky koalas could all ready be living there which gives them competition to see who is fittest to live in that certain tree. Another limiting factor the koala has is not moving as fast away from harmful things as fast as they should. Forest fires, vehicles, drought and domestic dogs are some things that put the population at risk.
I think that the koala population will increase in the future because more people are understanding that their actions when they hunt and cut trees do have an affect on the population. Now it is against the law to hunt wild koalas, which will help them reproduce and grow in their population. I also think the eucalyptus trees also won't be cut down as much because they also have a low population rate. There are also signs on roads in Australia that koalas live in that area so the drivers are aware that the koalas could be on the road. Overall I think that more people are becoming aware that that population of the koalas are endangered and that they can help stop them from going extinct.
The ecosystem will be affected if the population of the koala increases in the future. I think that there would be more eucalyptus trees to support the koala because people would know that they need the trees to surive, and that more koalas will have darker coats to hide themselves so they don't become lunch. Also, I think there would be more predators for the koala like the dingo because their is more prey for them.
